What is Raku?

Raku is a process in which a bisqued and glazed piece is fired quickly and removed from the outdoor kiln while still glowing red. The hot pice is placed into sawdust, where it is covered and left to smoke for a short time. Here the glazes aquire their vivid colours, while the unglazed surface blackens.

Many variables in the process, including timing and the degree of thermal shock, create random fissures and variations of colour. For this reason, each Raku sculpture is a unique piece that always surprises.
